Format text in Writer.

Open Office Writer provides you with multiple tools to format text. Formatting text includes changing font size, font type, text color and alignment. Formatting text also allows you to change certain portions of text to create headings or to separate sections of text. Formatting text is quick and straight forward in Open Office with the provided Formatting toolbar. The most commonly used tools are listed in a toolbar format above every Writer document you create for easy access.

Instructions

    • 1

Open any Open Office Writer document.

    • 2

Open the Formatting toolbar if it's not already open. Go to "View," select "Toolbars" and choose "Formatting."

If you see "B," "I" and "U" buttons above your document, the Formatting toolbar is open.

    • 3

Highlight any existing text to change the text format.

    • 4

      Choose your formatting type.

The first button is the "Styles and Formatting" button. It allows you to select heading types and indenting styles from a list. The list box beside this button provides a small selection of styles.

Select font types and sizes from the next two list boxes. Choose bold, italics or underline options using the next three buttons. The next section provides alignment options, such as left, center, right or justified.

Add numbering, bullets and indentations with the next section of buttons. Change font color, highlight text or add background color to text with the final three buttons.

    • 5

Choose format options before typing text to have those options applied to the next section of text you type.

    • 6

Remove formatting from text by first highlighting the text. Choose another option from the list boxes or click buttons to remove the applied formatting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clicking formatting buttons with no other options, such as the bold or "B" button, will remove or add formatting.

  • You must choose a font type and size. These two formatting options are required. By default, the options are Times New Roman and 12.
