How to Treat Tetanus in Donkeys

Open wounds make donkeys susceptible to tetanus.

Tetanus is caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria. This bacteria is often found in the feces of donkeys and soil. The spore of Clostridium tetani can stay in soil for years and is resistant to many standard disinfection processes. It infects donkeys by taking advantage of open wounds and cuts. Tetanus is a serious condition, it can lead to fatality if left untreated.

Things You'll Need

• Antibiotics
• Toxoid
• Antitoxin
• Cotton

Instructions

1. Administer antibiotics, tetanus toxoids and anti-toxins to your donkey. These are usually administered for several weeks. Your veterinarian will be able to prescribe these medications.

2. Protect your donkey from lights and sounds that might stimulate nervousness.

3. Place your donkey in a darkened stall and plug it's ears with cotton.

4. Restrict your donkey's activity for one month following treatment. Keep a close eye on your donkey every time he gets injured. A wound can be an invitation for tetanus.

5. Get your donkey vaccinated once a year for tetanus by a veterinarian to prevent it from returning.
