How to Mount Ubuntu on Firewire Macbook

Ubuntu can be installed on virtually any computer.

Linux is a free, open source computer operating system with over 600 distributions as of 2010. Ubuntu, a popular and user-friendly program of the Linux distributions, offers a fresh, updated release available for free download and installation every six months. Ubuntu comes stocked with useful applications such as an office suite, games, multimedia, and desktop access to hundreds of other free ones. Because it is developed with user ease in mind, you can mount Ubuntu on a Firewire Macbook to test it out before installing.

Things You'll Need

• Firewire Macbook
• Internet access
• CD creating software
• Blank CD-R

Instructions

1. Download the Ubuntu ISO to your desktop. Note that this file is 690 megabytes and can take several hours to download depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

2. Insert the blank CD-R and open your CD creating software. Choose "Burn Disc Image" from the list of actions and locate the Ubuntu ISO from the file browser. Select "Burn Disc" and allow the process to complete.

3. Restart the Macbook with the Ubuntu disc still in the drive. Hold down the "C" key to make the computer boot into the CD. When the Ubuntu menu comes up, choose "Run Ubuntu Without Making Changes to My Computer." This will mount Ubuntu on your Firewire Macbook and allow you to use and browse the operating system as though it were installed.
