From the mid 2000s until the 2013 model, you can pull the headrest on your Chevrolet Silverado 1500 up to the full-up position by pressing the button at the base of the inboard leg of the headrest. You then stick a small-diameter tool -- the leg of a heavy paper clip or a small pin punch -- into the hole on the base of the inboard side of the outboard headrest leg. Pull up with the pin inserted and the headrest comes off. On the 2014 Silverado 1500, press the large and the small buttons on the base to pull off the headrest instead of using a pin punch.

Safety First

General Motors cites safety concerns when they recommend that you don't alter or remove the headrest. The headrest is angled for maximum support in a collision. If the lack of comfort is a concern, GM suggests that you adjust the headrest height so the top of the headrest is level with the top of your head. If you still feel uncomfortable, tilt the seat back slightly and slide it a little forward so the headrest angle isn't quite as severe.

Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recall No. 13V488000 on some 2014 Silverado trucks. The recall requires a repair to the seatback recliner mechanism that affects the effectiveness of the headrests. Check with your dealer if you have a 2014 Silverado to see if your truck falls under the recall.
