Check a Dog's Avid Chip Registration Online

The Avid chip is a computer chip programmed with a number and injected under a dog's skin via hypodermic needle. The number programmed into the chip is unique to that dog and is read though the dog's skin (by using a radio signal) to identify that dog in the event of loss or theft. The chip allows a dog to be registered in a database (PetTrac) so that upon identification, the owner is notified immediately. If you found or lost a dog, or simply want to ensure your dog's registration is set up, you can check the registration online anytime.

Click the link labeled "Looking for a lost pet?".

    • 3

Fill out the form completely, including your name, your dog's name, your dog's Avid chip number and your contact information. If you have any special instructions regarding your dog (perhaps your dog has a medical condition or you have additional contact phone numbers) be sure to fill out that section of the form as well.

Wait for the results of your search from Avid Identification Systems, Inc., via phone or email (or both). The results will let you know whether or not your dog has been located and where he can be picked up.

How to Identify a Dog You Have Found

    • 6

Take the dog to a veterinarian or shelter (call ahead of time to ask if they do Avid chip identification). Make a note of the identification number once it has been read.

    • 7

    • 8

Click on the link labeled "Found a lost pet?".

Fill out the form as completely as possible. You may not know the dog's name, for example, but as long as the identification number is correct and your contact information is correct, that is all that you really need.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you found a lost dog, remember that not all dogs have an Avid chip. If you are unfamiliar with this dog there is a chance he doesn't have one. Also, keep in mind that if you take a dog to a facility to have his chip number read, they may opt to contact the owners and keep the dog at that facility until his owner can pick him up.
