How to Remove the Optical Drive From an NEC Laptop

Upgrading your own laptop can save you money.

NEC is widely known for their computers and other technological products, and NEC laptops are favorites with many home and business users. Many older models are still in use, and replacing an old style optical drive with a newer model can extend the laptop's life even further. Being able to make this change yourself can save you a lot of money compared with the cost of having the upgrade done at a repair shop.

Instructions

1. Turn the NEC laptop off and remove the AC power cord. Locate the battery release lever at the front of the unit and slide it to the unlocked position.

2. Grasp the front of the battery firmly and pull it out of the bay. Set the battery aside in a safe place.

3. Turn the laptop over and locate the release latches for the optical drive. Slide the release latch to the unlocked position and grasp the front of the optical drive.

4. Pull firmly on the front of the drive until it slides free of the bay. Replace the optical drive by pushing in on the drive until it snaps into place.
