How to Find the Right Port for Utorrent

How to Find the Right Port for Utorrent thumbnail
An open port makes for a stable connection.

UTorrent is a great free program you can use to host and download torrent files to your computer. Connections are based out of ports which can either be randomly set by your computer or manually set. If your torrent files seem to be downloading slower than usual, changing the port can be a quick fix.

Things You'll Need

  • UTorrent program (see resources below)

Instructions

    • 1

Check the ETA (estimated time) left on your downloading torrents. If they are stagnant and using "Force Start" will not push them to begin, you may want to change the current port.

    • 2

Look for the colored dot at the bottom right corner of the UTorrent window. This will either be red, yellow or green. It is an indicator of how well the current port is operating. Hovering over it will tell you the health of your connection: green is best, red is the worst (inactive).

    • 3

Click on the colored dot if it is yellow or red to open up your port settings. Here, you will see the current ID for the Incoming TCP port. Either enter another known open port number or click on the "Randomize Now" number to change to a random, less busy port.

Tips & Warnings

  • Continue randomizing your ports until you find a connection that is green (healthy) if you do not have the ID for a known open port.

  • In your UTorrent Network settings, you can check off a box to randomize your port every time you boot the program.
