How to Set up a DVD Recorder to a DVR Box

How to Set up a DVD Recorder to a DVR Box thumbnail
Connecting a DVD recorder to a DVR requires a standard AV cable.

Connecting a DVD recorder to a DVR box makes it possible to offload recorded TV programming from the DVR to a long-lasting media disc so programs can be deleted from the DVR hard drive. This frees up memory space. Standard component RGB video and audio cables are needed to connect the two devices. The plugs on the cables are color-coded to match the jacks, so the setup should take less than five minutes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the red, green and blue (RGB) video cables into the Video OUT jacks on the DVR, matching the color on each plug to the jack on the DVR.

    • 2

Connect the plugs on the other end to the Video IN jacks on the DVD recorder.

    • 3

Insert the white and red audio plugs into the left and right audio OUT jacks on the DVR. Match the plugs to the jack colors (white always connects to the left audio).

    • 4

Connect the plugs on the other end of the audio cables to the Audio IN jacks on the DVD recorder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Run a second set of AV cables from the OUT jacks on the DVD recorder to the IN jacks on the back of a TV to monitor the transfer from the DVR and to watch programs.

  • Disconnect both components from the electricity while hooking up AV cables.
