When upgrading a video card or other component on your computer, you may need to check the size of the power supply to make sure the components will work well together. If you do not already know the size of the power supply on your computer, it is something that you can find on your own. There is no command or program that can give you the size of your power supply. Instead, you have to physically look at the power supply.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your computer before looking for the size of its power supply. This will help prevent you from hurting yourself when taking apart your computer.

    • 2

Review the outside of your computer to see if there are any screws holding the case on it. If you have a tower-style computer, your case may just slide right off. You may have some small screws holding the case on. If that is the case, use a screwdriver to remove the screws. Take the case off your computer.

    • 3

Touch something metal that is not part of your computer before touching the computer again. This will ground you, which helps to prevent you from sending a static electricity charge to your computer and damaging components.

    • 4

Look at the power supply without removing it from the inside of the computer. Nothing should be obstructing your view. On the side of the power supply you will see the specs printed on it, which will give you the size of the power supply. The CompTechDoc has some images on its website (see Resources) to help you locate the power supply if you are not familiar with what you are looking for.

Put the case back on the computer once you have the size of your power supply.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there is no label on the power supply, you can take your computer to a local computer repair shop and they will help you get the size of the power supply.
