How to Copy the Config.Sys File From an XP Reinstall CD

The "config.sys" file is a file on the operating system installation disk that contains the system configuration parameters for your computer. Accessing this file for copying purposes requires that you perform a slight tweak to your viewing options, as it is a protected file that is normally hidden.

Instructions

1. Insert the XP reinstall CD into the computer.

2. Open the "My Computer" menu, open the "Tools" menu, click on the "Folder Options" menu, open the "View" tab, check the box marked "Show Hidden Files," and uncheck the box marked "Hide Protected Files."

3. Click on the "Start" button and select the "Search" option.

4. Select the option to search for "All Files and Folders."

5. Enter the "config.sys" filename into the search box and select the drive letter of your CD drive as the search location.

6. Press "Search" to locate the file.

7. Drag and drop the file from the Search menu to any other location on your hard drive to copy the file.
