How to Make a Skirted Futon Cover
A skirted futon cover will make your basic futon look more like a nice piece of furniture than a convertible bed. You can add a skirt to all four sides of the futon mattress, or just the front and sides, depending on your taste. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

1
Determine the amount of skirting fabric you need. Using the futon cover, measure the length of all the sides you want skirted. Add half that much again to each side to get the length of fabric needed for each skirted side.
-
2
Open the futon frame and lay the futon mattress out on top. Place the futon cover on the mattress. Determine the depth of the skirt by measuring from the edge of your futon when it is on the frame to the floor plus two inches.
-
-
3
Cut the fabric according to your measurements.
-
4
With the mattress still on the frame, draw a line on the futon cover along the top edge of all the sides you want to skirt. This will be your sewing line. Mark the half and quarter points along each side of the futon cover with your fabric marker.
-
5
Mark the half and quarter points along one long edge of each strip of skirt fabric with the marker.
-
6
On the other long edge of each strip, turn under ¼ inch and press. Turn under a second time, pinning into place as you go. Press again. Machine stitch. This is the hemmed edge of your futon skirt.
-
7
To gather each of the skirt strips, machine baste between the half and quarter points close to the edge of the unfinished sides of each of the skirt strips. Baste a second row close to the first one.
-
8
With right sides together, pin the basted edge to the futon cover. The hemmed edge will be facing the center of the old cover. Pin the corners first, then the center, then the quarter marks.
-
9
Pull the bottom threads of each basting section so that the gathered fabric is evenly spaced and fits between the marked points on the futon cover. Pin into place. Machine stitch.
-
10
Trim all the loose threads.
-
11
Press the skirt away from the cover at the seams.

Tips & Warnings
If you plan to set up your futon up as a sofa often instead of keeping it down as a bed, it is best to make the skirt only around the front edge of the futon mattress.
