Google Earth allows you to calculate distances between multiple points in its free standard version; however, the feature that allows you to calculate area is only available on the Professional version of Google Earth. Although, this version is sold at a high cost, targeted for business users, you can download a seven-day free trial version from Google's official page.

Instructions

      Launch Google Earth Pro, or download the seven-day free trial version from the Google Earth Pro official page.

      Click on the "Ruler" tool located on the top section of the screen. The "Ruler" dialog box displays. Four options display to measure distance and area: "Line," "Path," "Polygon" and "Circle."

      Click on the "Polygon" option. Move your cursor over to the Google Earth map. Notice your cursor displays a target zone.

      Click on three or more points within the map to select the area you wish to calculate. Notice the "Ruler" dialog box has registered the dimensions of your polygon and has displayed the corresponding area.

      Click on the drop-down menu that corresponds to "Area" within the "Ruler" dialog box and select how you wish the area to be displayed: Squared Miles, Squared Fee, Squared Meters or other. Click the "Clear" button to perform a new calculation.

      Calculate a circular area. Click on the "Circle" option in the "Ruler" dialog box.
      Click on two separate locations within the map to denote the radius of the circle you wish to create to calculate the area. The "Ruler" dialog box displays the area for the dimensions of the circle you've drawn.

  • For an alternate way of calculating areas with Google Earth, you can download third-party applications that allow you to do this for free.
