How to Open the Port Required for Utorrent

uTorrent is an application that allows you to download certain type of files called torrents. Just like you would search Google for information, you can search web sites such as piratebay.org for torrents. In order to download torrents, you need to install an application such as uTorrent. In order for uTorrent to download files, you must configure uTorrent on your router to open the applicable port.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," then "uTorrent." Alternatively, you can click "Start" and type "uTorrent" in the instant search field. "uTorrent" appears in the list for you to choose.

    • 2

Click "Options," then "Preferences" from the file menu. The Preferences window appears for you to make selections.

    • 3

Select "Connection" and click the "Random Port" button. A random port appears in the text box that uTorrent uses for downloads. Write this port number down as you will need it to configure your router. Close uTorrent. Next, you need to identify the IP address of the computer on which uTorrent is installed.

    • 4

Click "Start" and type "cmd" in the instant search field. The word "cmd.exe" appears in the list for you to choose.

    • 5

Type "ipconfig /all" in the command window and press the "Enter" key. The return results specify the IP address of the computer running uTorrent. Write this number down; you will need it to open the port and IP address on the router.

    • 6

Open the administrator portal to configure the router. Typically, this requires you to open a Internet browser and type the following: "192.168.1.1". Some routers will automatically open to the page for you to configure Internet access as well. The instructions provided with your router will give you the exact IP address if it is different from the one above.

    • 7

Select "Port Forwarding" and add the IP address and port number you wrote down earlier. Additionally, choose TCP and UDP, as the port needs to open both types of connections. uTorrent is now configured for downloading.
