How to Decorate a Ball of Yarn
For someone who loves to knit, a delightful, crafty gift would be balls of decorated yarn. Every serious knitter needs a supply of colorful yarn of different weights. These yarn balls can be presented in baskets, boxes or vases and embellished with creative additions.
Things You'll Need
- Balls of yarn (color and weight of your choice)
- Basket (optional)
- Decorative box (optional)
- Decorative ribbon
- Miniature knit flowers
- Knitting needles (optional)
- Vase (optional)
Instructions

1
Purchase about five or six different colors and thread-counts of knitter's yarn.
-
2
Roll each tube of yarn into a yarn ball. To do this, wrap the end of the tube's yarn string several times around two fingers. Slip the band off of your fingers and continue wrapping the yarn by rolling around the middle of the band several times. Continue wrapping the yard but change directions every 10 wraps. For example, you will wrap horizontally, then vertically, then horizontally and on until you have rolled the entire tube of yarn into a yarn ball.

3
Tie a decorative ribbon around two or three of the yarn balls. Simply place the ribbon strip beneath the ball, pull the ribbon around the ball both sides and tie a bow on top. Place the balls in a basket or decorative box.
-
4
Attach knitted flowers on the remaining yarn balls. You can do this by inserting a bobby pin on one end of the flower and sticking the pin through a few of the yarn ball strands. Place in the basket or box.
-
5
Decorate all the yarn balls with ribbon or knitted flowers as an alternative, instead of mixing up the embellishments.
-
6
Another option is to stick knitting needles into the yarn balls and then arrange them in a vase. This will give the appearance of pom-pom flowers in a vase.
