How to Remove AVG 6 from a Computer
AVG 6 is an excellent free alternative to paid antivirus software but there are occasions when you must uninstall the product because it has either stopped working properly, interferes with another program you wish to use or cannot coexist on your system with another piece of software such as a commercial antivirus program. The steps below will help most users uninstall AVG 6.
Things You'll Need
- Working PC (Vista or XP operating systems)
- Ability to access DOS prompt (if necessary)
- AVG uninstaller (if necessary)
Instructions
-
The Easy Way
-
1
Open your "Start Menu."
-
2
Click "Control Panel."
-
-
3
Click "Programs and Features," then click "Uninstall a Program."
-
4
Scroll down through list of available programs until you locate AVG.
-
5
Double-click AVG to begin the uninstall process.
-
6
Click "OK" if you see a security message asking you if it's okay to continue with the uninstall. Uninstall may take several moments. The uninstaller program should inform you whether or not you need to restart your computer after the uninstall to fully remove the software. If this method fails, continue to the next section.
Use AVG Uninstaller
-
7
Open your web browser and navigate to AVG's AVG Remover tool's page (http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools).
-
8
Click either the 32- or 64-bit "AVG Remover" from the list of available downloads (use the 64-bit if running on a Windows 64-bit platform and the 32-bit if using a 32-bit platform). Download should begin. For ease of use, choose your desktop as the save location for the file when prompted.
-
9
Install AVG Remover by double-clicking the icon on your desktop. The install process is automatic but may require you to follow the instructions on screen (depending on the version of the AVG Remover currently available). Again, for ease of use choose your desktop as the install location or choose to add a shortcut.
-
10
Restart your computer (only if necessary after AVG Remover finishes the install--you will be prompted to do so if it is).
-
11
Open the AVG Uninstaller. Either double-click the AVG Uninstaller icon on your desktop or, if you chose not to use your desktop or create a shortcut, click "Start Menu," "All Programs," (this appears as "Program Files" on Windows XP) "grisoft" and "AVG Uninstaller" in that order.
-
12
Follow the onscreen instructions to begin the Uninstall process. Once the uninstaller has successfully removed the software, restart your computer to ensure proper functionality. If this fails to uninstall AVG 6, continue on to the next section.
Using DOS Commands
-
13
Click "Start Menu."
-
14
Click "Run" for Windows XP or type "run" in the search bar for Windows Vista. This opens a text box that allows you to run DOS commands.
-
15
Type or cut and paste the following into the text box, making sure to include the quotations: "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\Setup.exe" /uninstall.
-
16
Click "OK." Uninstall should take place automatically. It may be necessary for you to restart your computer after uninstall.

Tips & Warnings
One of these methods should work for you. If none does, attempt to use the AVG Remover tool in Windows Safe Mode. (Enter Safe Mode by holding the "F8" key while Windows is starting.)
If that fails to work, your problem may more serious that simple system incompatibility. Consult the AVG customer support website (http://www.avg.com/us-en/support). Be sure to have your system information and any applicable error messages handy for reference.
