How to Fix Wrestling Mat Cuts

How to Fix Wrestling Mat Cuts thumbnail
Wrestling mats must be kept in good condition.

Amateur wrestling is a grueling activity that can be a very effective way to improve fitness as well as learn self-defense. The wrestling mat is essential to the sport because it allows traction for the competitors and provides a layer of padding to help protect someone who is getting thrown or taken down. Keeping the mat in good condition is of the utmost importance, and this includes repairing any cuts or gouges in the mat's surface.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the mat to determine if the repair needed involves a cut in the mat or if the damage is more of a hole or depression.

    • 2

Apply the glue to any cuts in the mat. The glue is specifically designed to bond with the latex and foam of the mat and is easily acquired with the purchase of any wresting mat repair kit. Allow the glue to dry overnight.

    • 3

Apply the caulking compound to any remaining gaps or to fill in any holes or depressions in the mat. Allow several hours to dry completely.

    • 4

Use a brush to gently apply the vinyl paint over the repairs you just made. The vinyl paint fumes can be toxic to breathe in, so ventilate the room and use a paint mask. Follow all instructions on the can.

    • 5

Allow at least 24 hours for the mat to dry, and keep it ventilated as much as possible during the process. Allow more drying time if recommended by the paint manufacturer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cuts and holes in the wrestling mat must be repaired immediately because they can become breeding grounds for bacteria.

  • No one should be allowed to use the wrestling mat while repairs are drying.
