How to Change Graphic Organizers
Graphic organizers help students organize their thoughts into coherent and meaningful sequences. Sometimes, however, it may become necessary to adapt a graphic organizer to meet the specific needs of an assignment or curriculum area. Many graphic organizers are intuitive and organize thoughts into a logical sequence. Others are variations on a basic chart or line diagram. Change graphic organizers to suit the needs of your specific assignment while considering the individual needs for your curriculum area and students.

1
Determine assignment objectives.Your graphic organizer will need to reflect the assignment goals. For example, if you want students to determine cause-and-effect relationships and you begin with a two-column organizer, you may alter it to reflect the progression of events. Add arrows to mark the progression from one event to the next and change the two-column boxes into text boxes for students to clearly separate ideas.

2
Begin with a template. Make changes to the template by inserting shapes and text boxes into your document. The text boxes, arrows or line connectors that you add should be arranged into one of the many graphic organizer patterns. A few of these are: tree diagram, plot pyramid and cause-and-effect sequence.

Experiment with unusual shapes. Insert a speech bubble shape into a graphic organizer for character identification. Insert a graphic beaker shape for an exercise in items that should be included in a science experiment.

4
Provide students with basic terminology they will need to complete the graphic organizer. Change the existing organizer by providing a text box in the bottom left-hand corner with "terms to know." This will allow all students to complete the organizer in a similar way.
