Who will win? It's in the numbers.

Betting on soccer can be more confusing than on other sporting events because of the possibility of a tie match. Calculating the odds of a soccer game involves numerous formulas when done at the major casinos and online gaming destinations. However, you can calculate your own odds for a soccer game at home, based on a little research and some elementary math.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine how the two teams have done during the season. Is one team leading the league, while the other is in the basement? Are both teams hovering just outside the relegation zone, which is the bottom part of a sports table showing how the teams have played over a period of time? Have the teams played against each other this season and how did it go? Look for trends and take into account such factors as streaks, current form, home-field advantage and injuries.

    • 2

Examine the data and make a simple prediction. Over the course of 10 games, how many would each team win? How many would end up in a draw? Try to take into account as much of the information as you created in the first paragraph. These predictions will be the basis of the odds that you create.

    • 3

Take the number of wins you give one of the teams and divide that into 10. This will be the "decimal" odds for the match. For instance, if you believe that a team will win four out of 10 times, the decimal odds for that team will be 2.5. This means that a bettor placing $1 on that team to win would get the dollar back, plus an extra $1.50 for a total of $2.50 if he won. Do the same with the other team's wins and the ties.

    • 4

To get fractional odds, simply make the numerator of the fraction 10 minus the number of wins (or draws) and the denominator the number of wins (or draws). To take the earlier example, the fractional odds would be 6/4, or 3/2 after reducing the fraction. This would be said as "3 to 2."

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not fret if your odds don't match up with those that you see at local sportsbooks. There are many variables to consider when making predictions. A sportsbook will move odds up or down depending on how much money is bet on which outcome.
