How to Make an Army Ribbon Rack

The prominent display of U.S. Army service ribbons will remind you and others of the service you’ve provided to your country. Ribbon racks represent your awards and accomplishments in a concise configuration. Once you size up the dimensions of your earned ribbons, you’ll need to purchase the rack that will hold them. Standard-style racks or trim-flat-style racks are available. Small glue-on devices that resemble full-sized service medals are attached to ribbons prior to rack attachment. A review of your AR 670-1 uniform manual will provide you with the correct ordering for wearing your ribbons.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your active duty personnel service records to determine awards issued up to the current time. Verify with your unit administrative personnel officer that your records are correct and complete. Look at your DD-214 form if you’re retired or otherwise discharged from service for awards already issued.

Purchase ribbons, racks and medal devices that correspond to your personal awards. Shop for ribbons at your local PX or Base Exchange. You can also buy them online.

    • 3

Spread the ribbons out on a flat surface to determine which ribbons require device attachment. Glue the devices onto the front of the appropriate associated ribbon. Use white glue only. Precisely line up and center the device for the best appearance.

    • 4

Sort ribbons and line them up according to priority and precedence. Ribbons with medals will precede length-of-service or branch-of-service ribbons.

    • 5

Make the ribbon rack from all of the assembled parts. Start at the top and work your way down from left to right. The ribbon representing the highest award will go at the top left. Slide ribbons onto standard metal racks, one next to the other with a 1/8-inch optional space between ribbons. Attach ribbons to thin racks using the supplied thin magnets.

    • 6

Attach the ribbon rack to the uniform as specified by U.S. Army uniform code. Be sure that the ribbon of highest order of precedence is worn nearest your right side.
