1
Set your butter out for an hour so that it begins to become soft. Dip a paper towel in the soft butter, and wipe a thin layer of butter all over the inside of the cake pans. Make sure you get the sides as well as the bottom of the pans. Then run some extra butter around the corners.

2
Sprinkle a few teaspoons of flour in to the cake pans. Shake the cake pans back and forth and side to side so that the flour reaches all of the areas of the cake pans. Tape the cake pans with the palm of your hand over a trash can to remove excess flour.

3
Pour the cake batter in to the greased cake pans as soon as you have finished mixing it. Then bake it as directed by your recipe instructions.
-
4
Take the cake pans out of the oven and let them cool for 10 minutes.
-
5
Run a butter knife around the edges of the cake pan to loosen the cake from the sides of the pan.
-
6
Put on a pair of oven mitts, and then set a wire rack over the top of one of the cake pans. Hold the cake pan and the wire rack with your hands, and then quickly flip them upside down. The wire rack will now be on the bottom with the cake pan on the top.
-
7
Pat the bottoms of the cake pans to loosen the bottom of the cake from the pan. Then slowly lift the pan up and away from the cake.
-
8
Place another wire rack on top of the cake so that you have a rack on the top and one on the bottom. Flip the racks with the cake in the middle so that your cake is now upside right. Take the rack off of the top of the cake. You now have a cake that is in one piece and ready for decorating.

Tips & Warnings
You can also cut a piece of wax paper to fit in the bottom of your cake pan. Grease the sheet of wax paper as well. When you flip the cake, it will come right out along with the piece of wax paper.
Spraying your cake pans with cooking spray is not as effective as using butter and flour to grease your pan.
