The Microscope E Lab is a fun and effective way to introduce students of all ages to the microscope. In this lab investigation, students will create a wet mount slide and practice using the microscope's settings and objectives.

Things You'll Need

  • Compound light microscope
  • Magazines or newspapers
  • Scissors
  • Slides
  • Slip covers
  • Water dropper

Instructions

  1. Teach

    • 1

      Direct students to cut out a letter "e" that is smaller than the size of a dime from a magazine or newspaper.

    • 2

      Direct students to place the "e" on the center of the slide and to place a drop of water on top of the letter. Place cover slip on top of the moistened "e."

    • 3

      Direct students to place the slide on the stage of their microscope using the stage clips.

    • 4

      Direct students to look through the lens at the lowest objective and to practice tuning and focusing the image of the letter "e" until it becomes clear. Direct them to draw what they see.

    • 5

      Direct students to increase the magnification objective and to practice focusing the letter with each objective. Tell them to draw what they see at each objective.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask students to bring in objects to mount on slides for the classroom microscope. Insect legs, cheek cells and pond water are also all interesting to look at magnified.

  • Warn students to be careful not to let the stage hit the lens of the microscope when on high magnification.
