Change the Created Date on a File

When a file is created by a program installed on your computer, your operating system will include a signature that states the time and date of its creation. For the user, this feature makes tracking the various drafts of a document easier. From an operating system standpoint, a file's time stamp is especially important when trying to restore a computer to its latest stable system configuration. However, if the time and calendar settings are inaccurate (because of Daylight-Saving time, Leap Year or time zone changes), the file will retain this erroneous signature, even when the settings are corrected. Fortunately, you can download a number of free programs that allow you to manually change the time-stamp signature on a file.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a free date-alteration program to your desktop. See "Resources" for a list of direct links to popular file-altering software.

    • 2

Double-click the file's icon on your desktop to install it.

    • 3

      Run the program.

    • 4

Click on "Add Files" in the main taskbar and navigate to the folder where your target file is located.

    • 5

Select the file and click "OK" to add it to the main queue.

    • 6

Check the box next to "Created" under the "Modify" header. The current date for the file will appear in the adjacent text box.

    • 7

Change the date in the text box to your liking and click "OK" to save the new date.
