Become a Metal Fabricator

Metal fabrication is the formation of metal, such as steel or iron, into a number of forms by welding, blacksmithing, boiler making, or steel erection. Metal fabricators have to be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints, accurately cut the metal into shapes and weld the metal into the structure according to the engineering drawings. In order to become a metal fabricator, you must have a high school diploma (or its equivalent) and obtain some on-the-job training in fabrication.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the proper education. Typically, a high school diploma or GED is required in order to obtain a job as a metal fabricator. Post-secondary education is not necessary.

    • 2

Obtain welding certification. You can get voluntary welding and metal fabrication certification through organizations such as the American Welding Society (See Resources). This is not a requirement for the majority of employers. However, this certificate can lead to more career opportunities as it shows potential employers that you are proficient in welding and metal fabrication.

    • 3

Obtain job experience. Many employers require 1 to 5 years experience in metal fabrication or welding. You can obtain this experience by attending a welding certification program or by accepting an entry-level position where you can acquire some on-the-job training.
