You should know how to feathering an image using your Photoshop software if you wish to work in any profession that involves photography or graphic design. Feathering an image allows you to blur the edges to give it a rustic feel. While feathering an image using this software may sound difficult, it is quite simple with the proper instructions.

      Open the Photoshop software and load the image that you wish to feather by clicking on "File" in the top menu bar and then selecting "Open." Select the photograph that you wish to alter and click "OK." Once the photo has been loaded, check to make sure there are no blemishes or distorted images that will detract from the final work.

      Click on the rectangular marquee selection tool shaped like a square from the toolbar and use it to highlight the areas that you want to feather. Turn on the "Ruler" function by clicking on "View" from the top menu and checking the "Rulers" option from the drop-down menu. Use it to make an even border around the areas that will be feathered.

      Choose the background that you want to use for the image. To do so, click on the "Set Background Color" icon at the bottom of the toolbar, and select a color that complements the image that you are feathering. Once the background has been chosen, click "Select" in the top menu and select "Feather" from the pop-up menu. Choose a radius from 4 to 12 pixels to determine the range of the feathering that will take place in the final image.

      Click on "Edit" in the top menu and select "Copy." Open a new window by going to "File" on the top menu and selecting "New." Paste the feathered image into the new window by selecting "Edit" from the menu at the top and clicking on "Paste." The new image will appear with the areas that you feathered included. Save the image to your computer by selecting "File" from the top menu and clicking on "Save."
