How to Clean a Computer's Flat Screen Monitor

Cleaning a computer monitor without causing any damage can be a delicate process.

Flat screen computer monitors, also sometimes known as LCD or flat=-panel monitors, are convenient because they take up very little space and tend to be more lightweight than earlier monitor models. However, these screens also collect dust, dirt, and other airborne particles, sometimes contributing to a less-than-perfect picture. Cleaning electronics of any kind can be difficult since water and electrical circuits don't mix, so following proper instructions on how to clean a flat screen monitor will make things easier, safer, and even relatively quick.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 mircofibre or cotton cloths
  • LCD cleaning solution or distilled water
  • Isopropyl alcohol (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off and unplug the monitor that is to be cleaned. If the flat screen is part of a laptop computer, shut down, unplug, and remove the battery from the computer if possible. This will help curb the risk of electric shock.

    • 2

Clean the monitor casing. Dampen a clean microfibre or cotton cloth with water, mixed with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol if desired for tougher smudges, wring it tightly over a sink to remove excess liquid, and wipe down the monitor's outer casing. This part of the monitor is cleaned first because if any damp solution from the cloth comes in contact with the more sensitive screen, it will be sure to be wiped off in the next step instead of left to possibly inflict damage.

    • 3

Wipe dust off the monitor screen lightly with another dry microfibre or cotton cloth. Do not push too hard on the screen while wiping as this could damage the liquid crystal display.

    • 4

Spray the monitor screen lightly with LCD cleaning solution, which can be purchased at most electronics stores, and gently wipe all traces of the solution off with the dry cloth. This step is not necessary if, after step 3, a desired level of cleanliness is reached. Distilled water can be used in place of LCD cleaning solution if the solution is not available.

Tips & Warnings

  • A light misting of water or solution is all that is needed on an LCD screen. Overspraying can possibly cause issues with electrical circuits.

  • Avoid cleaning a monitor screen with any kind of liquid unless absolutely necessary. Even LCD cleaning solution can cause problems if used too often or if it is applied too heavily.
