Bamboo shades provide a versatile window treatment with a warm look. Bamboo offers a natural, sustainable material. It's durable and allows light through for a closer connection between indoors and outdoors. The tropical association makes bamboo blinds work for both casual and sophisticated decorating schemes. Instructions

    • 1

Select fabric for the liner. To allow light while improving privacy, choose a light-colored fabric. Choose a dark or blackout fabric to make the room darker and improve insulation.

    • 2

Iron the fabric, if needed, and spread it out on a table. Lay the bamboo shade on top of the fabric.

    • 3

Mark around the fabric with tailor's chalk ¼ inch from the edges of the blind. For a full blackout effect, mark 1 inch above the top and bottom of the bamboo shade.

    • 4

Set the bamboo blind aside. Cut the fabric along the chalk lines.

    • 5

Place hemming tape ½-inch from the edges of the reverse side of the fabric. Use an iron set to the correct temperature for the fabric. Press a ½-inch hem in the fabric over the hemming tape.

    • 6

Lay the bamboo shade upside down on the table, and place the fabric face up on top of it. The front of the blind should be in contact with the table, and the side of the fabric that shows the hem should be in contact with the shade.

    • 7

Thread a needle with fishing line, and put a knot in the end of the fishing line. Tack the fabric liner to the bamboo shade. Hold the bamboo shade at least an inch above the table. Starting at the bottom of the shade, insert the needle so it goes between two pieces of bamboo 1 inch from the edge of the shade. Pull the needle all the way through, and put the needle in on the other side of the piece of bamboo. Encircle the one piece of bamboo five to six times with the fishing line to tack the liner on securely. Tack the liner every 6 inches on each side of the bamboo shade.

    • 8

Re-hang the bamboo shade. Tuck the fabric in at the top and the bottom of the shade.

Tips & Warnings

  • Obtain fabric at fabric stores or variety stores that sell sewing supplies.

  • Those who prefer not to sew may use heavy-duty clips, such as the kind used to hold documents. Attach the clips along the edge of the bamboo shade.
