How Can You Mute an iPhone?

How Can You Mute an iPhone? thumbnail
You can put your phone on mute if you are involved in another conversation.

Muting your iPhone allows you to stop the person on the other end of a conversation from hearing what you are saying. This is important if you have to interrupt the call and have a conversation with someone standing in front of you. While on a call, your iPhone displays six icons on its screen: "Mute," "Keypad," "Speaker," "Add Call" and "Contacts." Also, there is a switch on the side of the phone that allows you to quickly mute your phone's ringer on incoming calls, which is especially useful if you are in a setting, such as a meeting or doctor's office, and you do not want to disturb those around you.

Instructions

    • 1

Tap "Mute" on the iPhone screen during a call. "Mute" is the microphone icon. If the microphone icon has a bar through it, the phone is on mute and the caller cannot hear you.

    • 2

Tap "Mute" again to make the bar on the microphone icon disappear so listeners will then be able to hear you again.

    • 3

Slide the top button on the left side of the iPhone downward so the red dot in the slot becomes visible. This mutes the ringing of incoming calls. Slide it back up to hide the red dot to allow the phone to ring again.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can accidentally activate the mute button during a call. To avoid this, lock the phone by hitting the sleep/wake button. Your call won’t be dropped by doing this. When the iPhone is locked, touching the screen won’t do anything. Hit the sleep/wake button again to unlock the phone.
