How to Clean Motorcycle Chain

The chain on your motorcycle is crucial to its proper operation. It connects the transmission to the rear tire, providing forward power when you need it. Over time, the chain can dry out, which, if left untreated, can damage the chain beyond the point of repair. To prevent this, you need to clean your chain on a regular basis with a good quality chain cleaner and a few scrub brushes.

Things You'll Need

• Drop cloths
• Spray chain cleaner
• Scrub brush

Instructions

1. Park the motorcycle in a shaded area, preferably over a concrete or asphalt surface. Allow the motorcycle engine to cool before you work on it.

2. Drape the drop cloth across the motorcycle, sliding it behind the exposed chain. This is meant to protect the paint on your motorcycle, as well as the finish on the engine, so make sure it covers any areas you are planning on spraying.

3. Spray a section of chain with the chain cleaner. Then scrub the grease and grime away using the scrub brush. Repeat this process around the entire length of chain, rolling the motorcycle forward if necessary to access other sections of chain.
