When working at your desk, it's simple to extend the desktop of your Compaq laptop using the on-board monitor out. Simply connect a monitor via the appropriate cable and use Windows to tweak the settings.

      Determine the output of your laptop. Laptop's will typically have a VGA or DVI output to connect to an external monitor. Newer laptops may have an HDMI out. If you are unsure, refer to the Compaq's included documentation. In some cases, an adapter may be needed.

      Connect one end of the VGA or DVI cable (included with the monitor) to the VGA or DVI output on the laptop. If an adapter is needed, connect the adapter to the laptop and connect the VGA or DVI cable to the adapter.

      Connect the other end of the cable to the monitor's VGA or DVI input. Connect the monitor's power cable into a power outlet. Press the monitor's power button.

      Refer to the specific laptop's user manual as to which key combination switches between mirroring and extended desktop mode. Typically, it is Function+F3, Function+F5, Function+F8 or Function+F9.

      Open Window's Control Panel (via the Start menu) and select "Display Properties." Use this control panel to adjust the monitor's resolution, colors and orientation.
