How to Change the Zune OS

Change your Zune OS.

If you are the proud owner of a Zune, you have two options when it comes to changing the operating system (also known as the firmware) of the device. You can upgrade the operating system to a new version or downgrade the system to an older version. Upgrading to a newer version is much easier and safer on your Zune but both are possible. It is a good idea to back up your Zune music files on your computer before the upgrade or downgrade.

Things You'll Need

  • Zune software
  • USB Zune cable

Instructions

  1. Upgrading Your Zune OS

    • 1

Upgrade the Zune software on your computer to the latest version. From the front page of your Zune program, click "Settings", "Software", "General", then "Check for Updates." This will update your software using an Internet connection. After the update, close your software.

    • 2

Connect your Zune to the computer using the USB cable.

    • 3

Open your Zune software after the connection has been established. Your upgraded Zune software will look on the Internet for updates to your Zune's operating system. A notice will appear to update your device if the software finds it. You can also manually update the device by clicking "Settings", "Device", and "Device Update".

    Downgrading Your Zune

    • 4

Uninstall the Zune software from your PC using the "Uninstall Zune" program that can be found in your Zune folder.

    • 5

Remove the device drivers for your hardware from your computer. Open C:\Windows\Inf\ and right-click on the blank space in the folder and choose details. Right-click again and click "Arrange Icons By" and 'Modified". Delete the files that are named oemxx.info (each x will be a number) that have been last modified on September 3, 2008 at 12:29 AM. The two file sizes are 8.69 KB and 11.3 KB.

    • 6

Download and install an earlier Zune software version. Version 2.5 is available via download at the Software Download Mirror website (See Resource 1). Earlier versions than the current 4.x (1.x, 2.x, 3.x) can be found with an Internet search but are not available from the Zune website.

    • 7

Open the Zune software and choose "No" when you are asked if you want an upgrade. Format your Zune to remove the operating system by resetting the Zune (hold up + back) and then simultaneously pressing the "Back", "Play/Pause" and "Center" directional pad button when it starts back up. Zune 30 users: hold down "Right" on the directional pad instead of "Play/Pause."

    • 8

Connect the Zune to your computer. Your computer will detect the Zune and will begin to install the Zune 2.5 operating system.

Tips & Warnings

  • Downgrading your Zune may cause your Zune marketplace songs to no longer be accessible.
