How Do I Upgrade From Windows 2000 to Windows XP?
Once you've decided to take the plunge and upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, plan to devote at least an afternoon to the process. Before beginning, be sure to back up important files--such as documents, music and pictures--to a CD or other medium, as glitches can happen and important data can be lost during the upgrade.

1
Disconnect your computer from the Internet. While this step isn't absolutely necessary, it will protect your computer from viruses during the upgrade while your antivirus program isn't working.
-
2
Place the Win XP Pro disk in the CD or DVD ROM drive. The setup program should automatically begin. If it does not, click on the drive letter from "My Computer" and then click on "setup.exe" in the file folder.

-
3
Click "Install Windows" to begin the XP install wizard.
-
4
Click "Upgrade" and then click on the "Next" button.
-
5
Enter your XP key code when prompted. Follow the onscreen instructions to perform the upgrade to XP. Reboot your computer when required by the upgrade software.
-
6
Reconnect to the Internet to allow XP to validate. This will ensure that the operating system does not lock up in the future.

Tips & Warnings
Both Windows 2000 and 2000 Pro can only be upgraded to Windows XP Pro. You cannot upgrade to XP Home Edition.
Ensure all drivers are functioning properly after the upgrade by navigating to your "Control Panel" and clicking on "System." Choose the "Hardware" tab and then click "Device Manager." Scroll down the list of installed drivers. Those drivers that need updating will be highlighted with an exclamation point. Download the needed drivers from the manufacturer's website.
