How to Make a Flag Bunting

Create a festive atmosphere at your next holiday gathering or party by making flag bunting to coordinate with whatever color theme you are decorating. Bunting is quick and easy to make. This flag bunting features simple triangle-shaped flags that can be crafted from the same fabric or several fabrics of similar patterns and shades. Flag bunting is a wonderful decoration for indoors and outdoors and can be reused over and over again for a multitude of occasions.

Things You'll Need

• Cotton fabric, 3/4 yard
• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Iron
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Straight pins
• Sewing machine
• 2-inch bias tape, 3 yards

Instructions

1. Measure and cut a piece of cotton fabric 20 inches wide by 44 inches long. Fold the piece in half with the right sides together and matching the long edges. Press the fold. Your piece now measures 10 inches wide by 44 inches long.

2. Mark 4 inches in on one long edge using a pencil. Make additional marks every 8 inches. On the other long edge and starting from the same short end, mark 8 inches in. Make additional marks every 8 inches, with the last mark being 4 inches from the end.

3. Lay a ruler across the fabric width, connecting the first pair of staggered marks. Trace along the ruler. Repeat for each additional pair of marks, creating zigzag lines down the length of the fabric. Each zigzag creates a triangle. These are the flags for the bunting.

4. Pin the layers of each flag together. Cut out the flags. You will have 10 flags. You will not be using the half flags from the ends.

5. Sew the two long sides of each flag together, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Do not sew the 8-inch flag ends. Turn the flags right side out, and press.

6. Cut a 3-yard length of 2-inch bias tape. Fold the tape in half, with the wrong sides together and the long edges matching. Iron the fold.

7. Open the tape and lay it wrong side up on your worktable. Starting 12 inches from one end of the tape, lay the open end of the flag on the tape, with the edge even with the creased center. Fold the tape on the other side of the crease over the flag end, and pin. Skip 1 inch and pin another flag. Repeat until all the flags are pinned. You will be left with 12 inches of tape on each end. Fold the ends in half with the long edges together, and pin.

8. Sew the length of the bias tape as close to the pinned edge as possible. Use the ends as ties to hang your flag bunting.
