How Do I Get My Computer to Go to Sleep When Running Vista?
Windows Vista, the predecessor to the current operating system Windows 7, was initially plagued by problems. Due to a new 3D interface and an extensive array of poorly described features, users had trouble performing normal computing tasks in Vista. However, one task that hasn't changed is putting your PC to sleep. Sleep mode is a power-saving state that allows you to quickly start up your computer again when you return.

Access the desktop of your PC. You should see a Windows icon in the lower left corner of your screen.

Click on the Windows icon.

Click on the Power button at the bottom of the start menu.

Select "Sleep" from the contextual pop-up menu. Depending on your privacy settings, you may have to enter a password to put the computer to sleep.

Tips & Warnings
If you're using a laptop PC, you can also put your computer to sleep simply by closing the lid.
Putting your computer to sleep is not equivalent to shutting it down. In order to maintain maximum processing power, make sure to power down your computer at least once every month.
