Rest the PRAM in the Mac G4 to keep it running smoothly

PRAM ("P-Ram") is a small component in a Mac that stores default settings for items such as the status of its serial ports and SCSI bus, and basic functions such as speaker volume, clock function and video display. To solve issues that occur due to corrupted PRAM data, you can reset (zap) the PRAM, which will restore those settings to their factory defaults. These instructions are for a Mac G4 processor.

Instructions

    • 1

      Shut down your computer.

    • 2

Locate the following key combination on your keyboard before you reset the pram:
Command (Apple), Option, P, and R. It is best to know exactly where they are on the keyboard, as you will need to find them quickly for step 3.

    • 3

Push the restart button on your Mac. Listen for the start-up chimes. When you hear them, immediately hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys simultaneously. This operation requires using positioning four fingers in a semi-awkward position.

    • 4

Continue to hold down the keys until you hear the start-up chimes repeat for the second time, then release the keys.

Tips & Warnings

  • After resetting the PRAM, you may have to reset system data (for example, the clock) and designate the default startup disk .
