How Do I Turn Off Power to the Cigarette Lighter in a Ford Ranger?

The cigarette lighter in your Ford Ranger draws power off of the vehicle's battery when the lighter is engaged. However, you may never actually use the lighter or the power port it is connected to. Because of this, you may want to turn off the power of the cigarette lighter. In order to do so you have two different options, each providing its own list of pros and cons.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cigarette lighter from the lighter port in your vehicle. This prevents the lighter from drawing power from the battery. It also opens the port up for any attachments you want to connect (such as phone chargers).

    • 2

Open the user manual and turn to the area where fuses are covered. Look through the fuse guidelines until you find what fuse sends power to the cigarette lighter.

    • 3

Remove the fuse for the cigarette lighter. You may need needle-nose pliers to do this. The downside to removing the fuse is the clock and radio are connected to the same power. Once the fuse is removed, the two won't work until the fuse is reconnected.

    • 4

Keep the fuse in a safe location (such as your glove box) in case you want to reconnect the power to your cigarette lighter.
