Snakes in your yard can be a big problem. It can be even more worrying, and scary, if you happen to find one in your home. Poisonous or not, they are a nuisance, and calling an exterminator to get rid of them can be timely and costly. It may be beneficial to try to get rid of snakes yourself, and once they're gone you can certainly keep them from coming back. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Learn about the snake and whether or not it is poisonous before you physically attempt to remove it. Take note of its markings and estimated length. You can often identify a snake by these two things alone. Take a picture of it if possible, and cross reference it with a book about snakes or an online database (see resources). As long as you leave it alone and don't corner it, it will likely not attack you, as snakes only do that when they feel threatened.

    • 2

Use a net or hook to grab the snake and bring it outside. if you are not comfortable doing this, you can call someone to do it for you (recommended if it's poisonous), or buy a snake trap, which can range in style.

    • 3

Buy rat traps and set them out in your home and yard. If there are snakes in your home, they are drawn there for one of two reasons---either there is cover and protection, or there is food in the area. Eliminate the snake's food supply, which may include mice, rats and other rodents.

    • 4

Mow and clean your yard. Snakes look for cover and protection, and that includes long grass or a cluttered yard.

    • 5

Seal cracks in your home's foundation. The snakes are getting into your home somehow, and it is likely through small cracks in the home's foundation. Remember that snakes can climb, as well, so don't just look for openings along the ground---seal holes in your roof and walls as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are many products on the market that supposedly eliminate snakes, but a little research shows that they don't work, or at least not consistently. Try them if you feel the need, but be wary that they may let you down.

  • Always keep children away from snakes and from the materials you are using to get rid of the snakes.
