How Can I Delete iPhone Apps When They Are Loading?

The App Store has not only taken window-shopping to the iPhone's 3.5-inch multi-touch display, it has made impulse buying more impulsive. With the blink of a download, you have another App. Sometimes, however, your download can stick in a seemingly endless loop, during which you may decide that you no longer need that App. Luckily, it can be easily deleted.

  • Press the Sleep/Wake button on the right-hand side of the top edge of your iPhone and the "Home" button just below its screen at the same time to reboot your iPhone if your App is stuck downloading. Keep holding the two until the screen goes black and the Apple icon appears. Then you can let go.

  • Enter your passcode, if you have one, when your iPhone is done rebooting. Your iPhone will continue downloading the application. A blue line near the bottom of the Application icon will fill from left to right to show its progress and disappear when it has finished loading.

  • Tap and hold down anywhere in the row of the permanent four Application icons at the bottom of your iPhone. All your Application icons will start shaking, including the one you just downloaded. Each Application icon will now also have an "X" inside a circle on the top left-hand corner.

  • Tap the "X" to delete the App. Tap the "Delete" button on the left-hand side of the pop-up box that will appear. This will delete the application from the phone.

  • Sync your iPhone to your computer so that you can delete the Application from your iTunes store. If you do not, the App will reappear each time you sync your phone even if you delete it again from your iPhone. Once your iTunes recognizes your iPhone, it will appear in the left-hand column of your iTunes screen in the Devices section. You can either wait for it to sync or stop the sync from your iPhone by brushing your finger across the lock on your iPhone.

  • Click the iPhone icon or anywhere on the row in which it appears on your iTunes screen. It will show your iPhone's summary page. Click the "Applications" tab. Find the App that you just downloaded and no longer want and uncheck the box to its left. Click the "Apply" button on the bottom right-hand corner of the iTunes screen. Wait for your iPhone to re-sync.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network before you download applications. Also, download one App at a time and do not do anything else while you download an App.
  • Once the App starts to download, your iTunes account will be charged if you had to pay for the App. Deleting it quickly will not void your transaction.
