How to Create IOU Coupons

Although it is not an ideal situation, many retail stores sometimes run out of products that they have on sale. A good policy is to offer the customer an IOU when this happens so that they can take advantage of the sale price when the product is restocked. Of course, this IOU should be in writing. It is very helpful to have preprinted IOU coupons that the store staff can fill out with the details of the IOU.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a list of the fields that will be on the IOU coupon. These may include the product name, the product number, the sale price of the product, the expiration date of the coupon and a signature of a store representative.

    • 2

Create the coupon on your word processor. Open a blank document. Enter your store's name or add your logo and include your address, telephone number and website address. Type the list of fields that you decided upon in Step 1. Be sure to leave room for your cashiers to fill in the necessary information next to each field.

    • 3

Print the coupons. Use the Print function on your word processor to print the IOU coupons. You may want to use a special color paper to print the IOU coupons so they are easily recognizable by your staff.

    • 4

Train your staff to properly fill out the IOU coupons. Review the procedures to use when the coupons are redeemed.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to only allow certain trusted staff to issue IOU coupons. This can eliminate fraudulent IOU coupons from being issued.
