Changing garage door opener codes depends on your motor type.

Changing the codes on your electric garage door opener will depend on what type of coding device your opener uses. Older garage door openers have dip switches while newer models use a "Learn" button to reprogram garage door controls. One quick way to find out what type your opener uses is to remove the back cover from your remote control. If it has a line of white switches, your opener uses the dip switch method. Instructions

  1. Openers with a "Learn" Button

    • 1

Set a ladder under the rear of the garage door opener motor so that you can reach the back of the motor.

    • 2

Locate the "Learn" button on the opener motor housing. The button will be near the white limit adjustment screws, and there will also be a small LED light near the button. Some openers may require the removal of the opener light lens cover. To remove the cover, press in on each side with your fingers and pull the cover off the opener motor housing.

    • 3

Press the "Learn" button and hold the button until the LED light illuminates. This gives you 30 seconds to program either your remote control or the keyless entry.

    • 4

Press and hold the remote control button until the opener light flashes a couple of times and then turns off. Release the remote control button and press the remote control one more time to operate the garage door opener.

    • 5

Press a four-digit code on your keyless entry and press the "Enter" button if you are changing the keyless entry code. This will set the new code for your opener. Press the four-digit number and hit "Enter" again to operate the garage door opener.

    Openers with Dip Switches

    • 6

Locate the dip switches on the back of your garage door opener. The dip switches are a line of nine switches with three rows. Your remote controls and keyless entry must match the dip switch locations on the motor.

    • 7

Set a new code on the back of the motor by moving the individual dip switches up or down with a small flathead screwdriver. Take out a piece of paper and pencil and draw a simple picture of the dip switch locations.

    • 8

Slide the cover off the back of your remote control with your finger. Match the dip switch locations on your remote control with your drawing. Place the cover back on the remote control and push the remote control button to operate the garage door opener with the new code.

    • 9

Slide the keypad cover off your keyless entry if you are resetting the keyless entry. Move the dip switches inside the keyless entry to the same position as your drawing. Place the keypad cover back on your keyless entry and press your code to operate the garage door opener.
