A recessed outlet does not only look bad, but it can also present a safety issue of reaching into the wall to plug or unplug appliances. By adding an extension ring to the outlet box, you can adjust the depth of the box to be flush with the wall, and properly use a cover plate to protect the wiring inside. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power off to the outlet that you will be working on. The power should be turned off at the main circuit panel, typically located in the home's garage or utility room. The individual circuit breakers are labeled just inside the door panel of the circuit panel box.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the top and bottom screws on the electrical outlet. Pull the outlet out of the existing outlet box, as far as the wiring will allow.

    • 3

Slide the outlet extension ring over the outlet. Insert the back of the extension ring into the existing outlet box. Adjust the ring to the proper depth so the front of the ring is flush with the wall. Insert the included screws into each hole and tighten the extension ring to the outlet box, securing it in place.

    • 4

Line up the top and bottom holes of the outlet with the holes on the extension ring, and insert a screw into each hole and tighten them down, holding it in place. Place the cover plate included with the kit over the outlet, and insert a screw in the center hole and tighten it down onto the outlet.

    • 5

Turn the power back on to the outlet and plug in a light and test for power.
