How to Disconnect a Humidifier on a Furnace

Humidifiers can be disconnected from the furnace --- they don't have to run year-round. Do this in the summer anyway if your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) includes cooling. The shutdown process can be a simple one-step operation or a bit more elaborate depending on the model. When disconnecting the humidifier from the furnace, also perform maintenance procedures like cleaning and replacing the evaporator pad so the humidifier is ready for the next season. Instructions

    • 1

Close the saddle valve on the water supply line. The saddle valve is connected to a solenoid valve on the humidifier, which will disconnect the electricity.

    • 2

Close the damper installed in the bypass duct if one is installed.

    • 3

Drain and clean the water pan if your furnace humidifier has one.

    • 4

Disassemble the furnace humidifier following the instructions that came with the device. Pull the latch that secures the access panel, remove the door and slide the evaporator panel out. Replace the evaporator pad.

    • 5

Clean the humidifier's external and internal components with water and detergent. Use vinegar on scaled parts.

    • 6

Reassemble the humidifier, but don't open the damper or saddle valve. The humidifier will be disconnected and ready to come online in the winter.
