How to Use Embroidery Thread Wraps

How to Use Embroidery Thread Wraps thumbnail
Embroidery thread wraps help to keep needlework supplies in order.

Embroidery thread wraps are small, flat spools made of cardboard or plastic that allow needlework enthusiasts to store the special floss used in embroidery projects. These cards allow the user to easily unspool embroidery floss without the annoyance of tangling thread. When used in conjunction with a floss storage container, these wraps keep embroidery thread neatly contained and ready for use. You can also mount these wraps on special project rings that allow users easy access to the different colors of floss for which a particular project calls.

Things You'll Need

  • Embroidery floss in assorted colors
  • 1 embroidery thread wrap per color of thread
  • Floss organization box

Instructions

  1. Organizing Embroidery Thread

    • 1

Locate the end of the thread in a unit of factory packaged embroidery floss. The tip of the floss is usually found extending from one end of the packaged thread.

    • 2

Pull on the end of the thread gently to begin to unwind the floss without tangling. Slip the end of the thread through one of the two slanted slots at the top of the embroidery thread wrap.

    • 3

Tape the end of the thread to the center of the embroidery thread wrap with a 1/2 inch piece of cellophane tape.

    • 4

Wind the embroidery thread around the center of the wrap until you have wound all of the thread onto the card.

    • 5

Slip the other end of the thread through the remaining slanted slot at the top of the embroidery thread wrap.

    • 6

Store the thread in a floss organization box.

Organizing Thread for a Particular Project

    • 7

Gather the embroidery thread wraps containing the different colors of floss needed for a particular project.

    • 8

Unhook the latch on the thread organizing ring and open up the ring hinge.

    • 9

Loop each embroidery thread wrap onto the ring using the hole in the wrap. This hole is on the end of the embroidery thread wrap that is opposite the slotted end.

    • 10

Close the ring hinge and secure the latch.

Tips & Warnings

  • For easy access, arrange embroidery floss in organizational containers according to color family or by manufacturer's number.

  • Never store embroidery thread and scissors together in a deep bag. The thread is likely to get tangled and there is a danger of injury from reaching blindly into the bag and coming into contact with sharp scissor edges.
