Wire a House With Internet

If you want to access the Internet in each room of your home, wiring each room is important. That way, you will be able to be online no matter which room you are in. If you are not using a wireless router, you can use a regular router and string CAT 5 cords throughout your home so each room has an Internet plug in. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Router
  • CAT 5 Cords at least 50 feet (one for each room you'd like to wire)

Instructions

    • 1

Hook up your router to your modem in whatever room the cable or Internet company has installed the modem.

    • 2

Plug a CAT 5 cable into the back of the router. Plug one in for each room you would like to wire. If you want Internet in the bedroom, kitchen, and living room, plug three cords into the router. They should be at least 50 feet long, but might need to be much longer, depending on how big your house is.

    • 3

String the first cord into the first room. Use a staple gun or wire clasps to snake the wire along the baseboards from the room with the modem to the room where you would like the Internet.

    • 4

Continue to thread the wire through each room until you have reached the room where you would like it.

    • 5

Secure the CAT 5 cable somewhere in the room where you can hook up your computer - to a desk, a counter top, or beside the couch or bed.

    • 6

Repeat with the other CAT 5 cables until you have a cable in each room you would like to have Internet.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can buy a splitter to hook more Cat 5 cables into your router.

  • You can drill holes in your floor or go through the heating vents to find shorter routes to rooms above or below you.

  • You can also "wire" a house with Internet by buying a wireless router and plugging it into your internet modem. Any computer with a wireless connection can then connect to the Internet in your home.
