Instructions

    • 1

Buy or rent a DSL modem. You can do so from your Internet company, but you can also do so from a store. If you buy your own DSL modem, just call the phone or Internet company first to make sure you are purchasing a model that will work with your connection.

    • 2

Open the box for the new DSL modem and remove it from its packaging. Save all the packaging in case it doesn't work and you need to send it back or take it back to the store.

    • 3

Unplug the old modem from the Internet source (or phone line) and from the router, if you have a router. Set the old modem aside.

    • 4

Place the new modem in the same area your old one was located.

    • 5

Connect the power cord to the AC outlet in the back of the modem, and then plug it into the wall.

    • 6

Connect the phone line, or DSL line, to the back of your modem, into the slot that says "Internet in" or "from phone line" or "Internet"

    • 7

Connect this new modem to your router, if you have one, by plugging your CAT 5 cable into the back of the modem and connecting it to the router. Connect it directly to your computer if you do not have a router.

    • 8

Turn on your computer. For some modems, you will have to go through a set up process. If this is so, a CD will be included or your computer will direct you to a website. Most DSL modems, however, will begin to work right away.
