How to Convert .Mdi to .Pdf

Scanned documents are often saved as Microsoft Digital Imaging (.MDI) files from within Microsoft Office, but these are more difficult to search and share than a Portable Document Format (.PDF) file. While an .MDI file can only be opened with Microsoft Office and may lose some fonts or formatting depending on the recipient’s computer settings, a .PDF retains all fonts and formatting and can be opened on almost any computer with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Converting an existing .MDI file into a .PDF file takes just a few steps with Microsoft Office.

  • Download and install the free Microsoft Office Save As PDF Add-in from Microsoft.

  • Launch Microsoft Word.

  • Go to "File" "Open" and double-click on the .MDI file you wish to convert into a .PDF.

  • Go to "File" "Save As" and choose "PDF (*.pdf)" from the "Save as Type" drop-down field. Click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • As an alternative to the free Microsoft Office "Save as PDF" plug-in, you can also use a PDF print driver. With this software installed, you can create a PDF from any file by opening the file, going to "File" "Print," and choosing the PDF print driver in lieu of your real printer. A new PDF document will then open on your computer.
