How Do I Know What Format My DVD Burner Has?

Like CDs, DVDs come in multiple formats, such as DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. As a result of this variety of formats, many different DVD drives burn only a select group of DVDs. If you place the wrong DVD format into the burner, it will not be recognized and you won't be able to use it. Determining compatible DVD formats will insure that any DVD used in the drive will work.

Instructions

1. Consult your DVD drive manual. The manual will have the acceptable formats listed in its contents.

2. Look at the front of the DVD drive. Some DVD drives display the formats that can be used on the disc tray, or on the front of the drive.

3. Find the manufacturer's website and look up your DVD drive model. The information on the site should include compatible formats.

4. Insert DVDs of various formats, making note of what the DVD drive reads and doesn't read.
