How to Become a NASCAR Car Hauler

When NASCAR teams takes to the road, engines fire and the teams are in motion long before the green flag flies. NASCAR, or the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, conducts more than 1,200 races a year at 100 tracks all over North America. Each race, part sporting event and part traveling circus, brings the NASCAR family together for a week of concentrated preparation and competition. Landing a job within this tight-knit group requires time, energy and commitment.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare for being a car hauler by obtaining a commercial driver’s license (CDL). The Federal Highway Administration sets standards for drivers of commercial vehicles that cross state lines. The states issue the licenses to individuals who demonstrate the skills and knowledge required by federal standards.

    • 2

Hone your skills by getting some experience. You’ll need to establish a track record for safe and effective driving to be considered for a job as a car hauler. Try to find driving opportunities that are racing-related. Jobs such as hauling equipment, transporting souvenirs or supplies and transporting the cars for a non-NASCAR team will give you the right experience to demonstrate your commitment to the sport.

    • 3

Move to North Carolina. If you don’t already live in the Mooresville-Charlotte area, you will have to relocate to be where the action is. Mooresville alone is home to more than 70 NASCAR teams.

    • 4

Cultivate relationships with people connected to NASCAR. The phrase “NASCAR family” is more than just an expression. NASCAR history is the history of the families that have dominated the sport. The France family founded NASCAR and still manages the franchise. Racing history is peppered with family names such as Petty, Jarrett, Wallace and Earnhardt. If you’re not a member of a racing family, you’ll have to overcome your outsider status by making connections. Go out of your way to meet people involved with NASCAR and keep in touch with everyone you meet.

    • 5

Be prepared to start at the bottom. Besides the well-known Sprint, Nationwide and Camping World circuits, NASCAR sanctions one local series, two international series and four regional series. Every series has a roster of teams with cars to move.

    • 6

Develop skills, in addition to driving your rig, that NASCAR teams value. Show prospective employers that you can contribute to the team effort after you’ve gotten the cars to the track. If you’re willing to sweep up the garage area, run errands or barbecue spicy ribs for the crew, you’ll make yourself a valuable asset to the team.

Tips & Warnings

  • Besides meeting the requirements of the job, NASCAR looks for the same qualities that any other employer wants. Be punctual and stay late if it’s needed, do your job without waiting to be asked, find something useful to do when you have some time, and, most important, get along with the other members of the team.
