Wireless Internet service provides a great deal of convenience, but figuring out how to set up a connection and use your wireless-enabled computer can be a bit daunting. A wireless modem or router is necessary in order to provide a wireless signal. Your computer must also be equipped with a device for reading that signal known as a wireless card. Once you have selected an Internet Service Provider (ISP) the process of setting up wireless Internet service can begin.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your options may be limited by your geographic area. Most providers require that the initial installation of an Internet connection is performed by their technicians. The provider will install a central hub for the Internet in your home called a modem. This is the point where the connection will enter your house. If the modem provided is already wireless, you only need to configure your computer for the wireless signal.

    • 2

Unplug your modem to turn off the signal and connect the wireless router to the modem using the Ethernet cable. Most routers will have ports located on the back side of the device with the purpose of the port printed above the opening. Select the port for the connection to the modem.

    • 3

Plug in your modem and allow the modem to cycle fully to operation. Make sure the light for the Internet service indicates that an Internet signal is acquired.

    • 4

Plug in your wireless router. This will begin the process for your wireless signal to be broadcast. Wait until the light for "WLAN" or "LAN" is lit on your modem, indicating the two devices are connected.

    • 5

Connect your computer directly to the router and open your Web browser to configure your wireless Internet settings. You will need to do this before connecting to the Internet. Look at the instructions on your router and enter the home IP address for the router in the address bar of your browser. You will need to enter the settings or configuration area where you will name your wireless connection, apply a password and set an administrative password to prevent changes from being made.

    • 6

Configure your computer for use with wireless Internet. This process will vary based on your operating system. Open the network connections option and select your network, then enter your wireless password. Your computer may configure itself automatically for connection to your wireless Internet service. If it does not, open your Network Preferences and make sure the options for obtaining an IP address and DNS server automatically are enabled.
