How to Trace an IP

Trace an IP

Every user has an Internet Protocol or IP address. This IP address represents the user's location in terms of the Internet, similar to a postal address offline. Since every Internet user or server has an IP address, this also allows the user to be traced to a degree via his IP address. If you have a problem with a user online and have his IP address, you can trace it to a location or an ISP.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the Traceroute program on your PC to trace the IP address. You can find this by clicking "Start" then typing "tracert" followed by the IP address you want to trace in the box that appears. (XP users should click the "Run" button before typing anything.)

    • 2

Use a Geolocation tracking service to find the IP address's general location. Enter the IP address into the website, and it will give you a general part of the world where the IP address comes from.

    • 3

Use a WHOIS search to trace the IP address. While it will not give you the physical location of the IP address, it will give you information about the ISP that owns that IP address, including an email address to contact when dealing with abuse.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will not be able to get anything more than a general location or IP address when tracing IP addresses. You will need to contact the ISP of the IP address directly for any additional information.

  • Do not attempt to find or confront the user of the IP address. If there is a problem such as a threat to life or property, or damage to property, always get the police or other authorities involved.

  • IP addresses can be spoofed, so do not completely rely on them.
