Random access memory or RAM is one of the most important determinants of a computer's operating speed. A computer with insufficient RAM will tend to experience lag when running intense programs or while multitasking. The speed and quantity of RAM in laptops is often less than that of desktop computers; a RAM upgrade can significantly improve a laptop's performance. Before buying or installing new RAM, however, it is important to determine what types of RAM are compatible with your laptop.

Read through your laptop's user manual to determine the proper type of RAM to use. The manual should have information about your motherboard and the type of RAM the motherboard can use.

Check your computer manufacturer's website. Popular laptop computer makers like Dell, HP, Gateway and others often have technical support information online for each of their computer models, and may even have full downloadable user manuals. Computer manufacturers will often sell RAM upgrades designed for specific models directly to their customers.

Use Crucial adviser or scanner. Crucial is a RAM manufacturer that hosts free RAM assessment tools; simply enter the relevant information about your computer in the drop down boxes and it will display detailed technical information about your computer and recommend compatible RAM.

Use CPU-Z, a free downloadable system diagnostic tool, to identify your RAM and motherboard. Download the program at the link, open the .exe file, and check the "mainboard" and "SPD" tabs to find detailed information on your motherboard and currently installed RAM. RAM of the same type currently installed will be compatible; motherboard manufacturers will also often have technical information online such as RAM compatibility--the motherboard manufacturer and model number will be listed on the "mainboard" tab.
